He received the higher ordination as a bhikkhu on 23 October 1990 at Kemāsīvaṃ Pariyatti School in Kyaikhto, where he studied Buddhist Pali Studies. He passed the “Pathama Gyi” examinations in 1998.

From 1998 to 2003, Ashin Ukkansa was a teacher of Pali language at Sasana Lyin Yaung Kyi Pariyatti School, at Pago.

Ashin Ukkansa went to Pa-Auk Forest Monastery in May 2003, and learned and practiced Samatha & Vipassana meditation under the Abbot, Venerable Pa-Auk Sayadaw.

Meditation Retreat

Typical daily schedule for the Meditation Retreat begins with the first sitting at 4.30am and the last sitting ending at 9pm.

All participants are required to stay-in, to observe 8 precepts and Noble silence. Two vegetarian meals (breakfast and lunch) will be served daily.

Retreat attendance is free of charge, except that yogis have to pay for their own ferry ticket to St John’s Island (currently at $15 per person return trip). Dana, on a free will basis is most welcome. This will help to defray running cost of the Retreat which includes the yogi’s meals, the rental of the holiday camp sites at St John’s Island, transportation costs, and incidental expenses.
